Important CDL Updates All Drivers Must Know

Posted on December 23, 2025

We want to make all drivers aware of two important government-enforced rules that can directly affect your CDL status and ability to drive. These rules are being handled by government computer systems, which means exact information matters. Even small mistakes can lead to serious consequences.

Please read carefully.

Medical Card Information Must Match Your CDL Exactly

When you go for a new DOT medical exam, the medical examiner must write your full name and address exactly as it appears on your CDL.

This means:

  • Your name must match letter-for-letter
  • Your address must match exactly
    • If you have not updated your CDL yet, you must use your old address at the medical exam
    • If your address has changed, you must update your CDL before going for your medical exam
  • No abbreviations, nicknames, or formatting changes
    • Example: If your CDL states your name as “John M. Smith,” the medical examiner must write it exactly the same: John M. Smith – not John Michael Smith or John Smith.

Positive Drug or Alcohol Tests Have Immediate Consequences

If a driver tests positive for drugs or alcohol, the result is reported to the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse Database. Once reported to the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, the license bureau is notified and your CDL will be downgraded to a regular license. You will not be allowed to drive a commercial vehicle.

Returning to CDL eligibility:

  • Visit a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)
  • Complete all SAP-recommended steps
  • Participate in monthly random testing (often up to two (2) years)

During this process, you cannot drive a truck. You must successfully complete the SAP program to be considered for CDL reinstatement.

Keep your information up to date. If you are unsure, ask before taking action.
